VIEW Book Discussion: Between the World and Me

This session is designated for discussing  Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me, the National Book Award winning non-fiction text that addresses the mechanisms of institutional racism. In this book, Coates uses the form of a letter written to his son about the realities of being Black in America and infuses that letter with personal reflection on his own experiences.

This session will be facilitated by members of the Burlington High School VIEW (Valuing and Inspiring Equity in our World) Committee. Through discussion of Between the World and Me, VIEW hopes to initiate important conversations among our faculty and raise equity consciousness in our schools.

Although no homework can be required for professional development, participants in this session will benefit from having read the book before attending. If you are considering what books to add to your summer reading list, we recommend Between the World and Me.

New School Safety Protocol
Burlington Public Schools will be updating its Safety School Protocol and adopting The Standard Response Protocol developed by the I Love You Guys Foundation.  A review of this new protocol will be led by Burlington Police Lieutenant Glen Mills who was trained this summer along with administrators from Burlington High School.

A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by school and district administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats.
